GANAPATI MONCOQ
B i o g r a p h y
Born in 1960, in Marseille (France), his family is ori-
ginally from the French carribean island, Martinique.
Then the family moved to the suburb of Paris, where
he studied piano; after some years, unsatisfied with
the teaching, he went on exploring the musical uni-
verse, reading a lot of music, piano, chamber music,
concertos, listening different styles, including Nina
Simone, Tina Turner, Keit Jarrett and many others.
He enriched his art studying great masters such as
Vladimir Horowitz ( his absolute reference ), Arturo
Benedetti Michelangeli, Edwin Fischer, Sviatoslav Richter,Claudio Arrau, Wilhelm Kempf, Emil Gilels, Lazar Berman.
Except Kempf, he had the chance to hear them in concert, though following the master Vladimir
Horowitz advice, he avoid imitating their style.
In 1988, a new dimension came into his life. Since
long,he was attracted toward spirituality, like Soufism. And this year he met Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, through
Sahaja yoga, and this practice just enlightented his
understanding of the musical art.
In 2006, he joined the " Choeur de l'Orchestre de Paris"
and started to study the art of singing.
Then he quit after some years, but went on studying
the art of the lied. To listen to Maria Callas, Dietrich
Fischer-Diskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Elly Ameling,
and Jessye Norman was of a great help.
One of his project is to record some of those lieder, voice and piano.
